About the Department


GENERAL PHILOSOPHY

The fundamental concern of the humanities is with man and his complex nature especially his multifaceted relationships with the world around and beyond. Language being the primary tool in all human activities and also one of the most complex aspects of human nature, man must therefore try to investigate and explain better understanding of it (language). The philosophy is framed such that it provides the student with a good language background both in English and Nigerian/African languages and a working knowledge of French, thus equips the student with theoretical and description background in Linguistics whose application of the study of Nigerian and African languages is essential.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The need for a B.A. degree Programme in Linguistics is based on the following Aims and Objectives.

  • To equip the students with a good knowledge of the main principles of current theories and practices of Linguistics
  • To train them to be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired by languages related task and problems, particularly in their own environment, and.
  • To prepare them for further studies in the discipline and/or relevant careers in teaching, administration, the media, social engineering, etc.
  • To enable students to acquire spoken and written competence in Arabic language.
  • To acquaint students with the socio-cultural, economic, political and diplomatic aspects of the life of the native speakers of the language, with a view of promoting international understanding.
  • To equip students with adequate training for jobs in the fields of teaching, translation and interpretation, administration and diplomatic service.
